The Tree Plan for Lake Elizabeth, designed but never fully planted by Landscape Architect John Ormsbee Simonds, is coming to fruition. Forty one new trees have been planted and guaranteed for two years, thanks to the Treevitalize Partnership (Allegheny County Parks, City of Pittsburgh, DCNR, Tree Pittsburgh and Western PA Conservancy). Funding was provided by the ARRA federal stimulus program administered through PennVEST.
The National Aviary completed a $18.5 million expansion including a new façade, new entrance, and new Bistro to Go café with both indoor and outdoor seating. The ACI and neighborhood architects Bob Baumbach, John Francona and Jeff King provided valuable advice and suggestions for successfully integrating the building into its historic park setting.
A rain garden, natural playground, musical instruments and a limb bender are all part of designs for a new outdoor play space planned for Pittsburgh King k-8 school. The ACI convened the King Outdoors Team with representatives of Western Pennsylvania Conservancy (WPC), Urban Impact, Allegheny Center Alliance Church, neighbors from East Allegheny and Central Northside and the school to work with landscape architects Pashek Associates. A design grant to ACI from the Community Design Center of Pittsburgh and funding from the WPC’s School Grounds Greening Project has made the work possible. Implementation will be phased, with early projects supported by WPC, Children’s Museum’s Charm Bracelet Fund and NRG Energy Center. Concurrently, through a grant from the Heinz Endowments Youth Philanthropy Fund, The Warhol is creating art with students inspired by the park setting.
Restoration of the Northeast Common will get underway as soon as the ground thaws. New paths, lawns, lights and pedestrian amenities will be installed between East Ohio and Tripoli Streets, making a nice new home for the Farmers Market. From now until May 31, 2011, every dollar donated to support the Northeast Common and Fountain project will be matched by the Colcom Foundation up to $100,000. Donations may be made at www.alleghenycommons.org.
The City of Pittsburgh has determined that West Ohio Street’s iron truss bridge must be replaced. Because the Commons is eligible for the National Register for Historic Places, ACI has obtained “Consulting Party” status and will be at the table to advocate for preservation of the park’s historic landscape throughout the design process.
For the fourth year running, teens from the Student Conservation Association will be honing their green job skills in the Commons. Tree care, monument tending and removal of invasive weeds are among their accomplishments. Look for them for 8 weeks in July and August.
Support from Mayor Luke Ravenstahl’s Green-Up Team, as well as in-kind support from NRG Energy Center Pittsburgh will make removal of a sea of deteriorating asphalt just north of the Sue Murray Pool. The area will be returned to lawn, leaving half-court basketball.
